Making memories for those who are losing theirs
Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club
Our annual afternoon hosting our friends with Alzheimer’s disease is proving increasingly popular.
But it couldn’t be done without the hard work and enthusiasm of so many club members.
Jennie Evans explains what we do – and how it is appreciated.
July 28 was once again a sunny day and just right for the members who came with Tim Wilkins [West Sussex Alzheimer’s Society] to play bowls or learn the fundamental art of the game.
Tim's group have been visiting our club for many years, even before the pandemic.
Thirty people attended - some with partners, which surprised the tea ladies who were expecting 16-20.
Apparently, every year more people want to come to our club for the afternoon.
Four rinks were set up and the visitors divided and given tuition from our members. Others placed the jack and some helped out on the green - everybody had a job to do.
Tables were laid and cakes and biscuits with tea were prepared - thanks to Tim, who made a special visit to Sainsbury’s for supplies, and a milk run by Jennie, as we were running out.
The visitors enjoyed their tea and Tim thanked the club members for the welcome we gave them.
I would like to thank again all the club members who came for the afternoon and worked on the green, setting up and clearing away, along with all those who helped with the setting of tables and the washing-up.
*Dorothy kindly took some photos but we have decided not to publish them without the express consent of the visitors or those making decisions on their behalf.
