Congratulations to our greenkeeper, Marley Brooks, who has passed his advanced exams with flying colours.

Marley, who was appointed by greens contractor Glendale Services to look after Beech Hurst less than two years ago, has been tending our playing surface – and one or two more in Mid Sussex – while studying at Plumpton College.

Now he has completed his level-three advanced sports turf technician apprenticeship, passing with a distinction… a testament to his dedication and ability, and probably no surprise to those of us who have witnessed the transformation of our green in the past couple of years.

A combination of poor weather and previous problems with his predecessors’ work on the green had left it in less than perfect condition.

And the abnormally dry April this year – combined with the failure of our sprinkler system – presented an additional challenge, which has hampered Marley’s ability to progress this summer.

Compliments

None the less, it’s drawn compliments from other clubs, who have also had to contend with the weather challenges.

Marley said: “The course was great at developing my knowledge. It has given me more confidence in my abilities by achieving a formal qualification. My tutor, Paul Brooker, was very supportive during my studies, along with Glendale, and I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to do the course with them.”

He hopes to advance his career still further, once a level-five turf technical manager course is in place.

Club secretary Jennie Evans said: “The bowls club recognises how lucky we are to have Marley tending our green with such care. He also goes above and beyond, helping when we have special days, making our green look perfect.“
