On Saturday, June 20, Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst played against a team from Friends of English Bowling.

The team arrived from several southern counties, including one man from Cornwall. They were on a three-day mini-tour of the South.

Friends of English Bowling do fund-raising and support flat-green bowls in England.

Eighteen players arrived with four supporters. All six rinks were in use, the green looked magnificent (thank you, Marley), and on what was expected to be a hot day, there was a gentle breeze, so the temperature was lovely.

The highest score of the afternoon was achieved by rink three - Basil Larkins, Ted Prince and Jennie Evans - and they were presented with a potted cactus each.

The club also received a framed certificate to commemorate the game.

We lost by 10 points but we all enjoyed a great afternoon.

Play was followed by a beautiful buffet, with numerous home-made cakes.

Probably the most exciting thing for the visitors, judging by their smiles, was the chance to ride on one of two trains twice round the park before leaving.
