In recent years the Carrow Cup has often been the first trophy that new bowlers have tended to win.

In three of the past four years, one of the winning triples has been a bowler in their first year at the club.

But not this time.

In sweltering, humid conditions, in a contest played over best part of five hours, the experienced trio of Elsie Wilding, John Milsom and Phoom Saihom triumphed, culminating in an emphatic victory in the five-end final against David Leach, Ted Prince and Jennie Evans.

It was a popular win for a much-loved bunch who have each had their share of setbacks in the recent past.

For John, it was only his third competitive outing since debilitating illness – and less than 24 hours after playing in a friendly at Buxted Park in equally challenging conditions.

For Phoom – a past winner of numerous club trophies – it was a rare appearance after a long time away from the game.

And for Elsie – the final’s outstanding player - it was fitting to see her pick up yet another trophy after injuries persuaded her not to defend the two singles trophies she won last season.

You can’t keep a good bowler down, as she proved with her match-winning performance in the final.

The two finalists had accumulated the highest scores in a series of matches across the day (see individual team scores below).

Match arrangements were finalised by John on the morning of the game after captain Graham Brown was not well enough to attend.

Result: Elsie Wilding, John Milsom and Phoom Saihom beat David Leach, Ted Prince and Jennie Evans 7-1.

Team cumulative scores (from four five-end games):

Elsie Wilding, John Milsom and Phoom Saihom – 27 points
David Leach, Ted Prince and Jennie Evans – 25 points
Neville Dalton, Peter Burman and Stephen Banks – 23 points
Nicola Coles, David King and Mark Gooch – 19 points
John Box, Eileen Waddingham and Jill Hatfield – 15 points
Marge Breading, Muriel Malins and Dorothy Glasby - 14 points
Andrew Croft, Clive Thomas and Jacquie Kelly – 13 points
Anne Bosman, Fiona Burman and Gwen Croft – 11 points
