From head-spinner to money-spinner: action-packed day at Hurstpierpoint
Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club
It was back to inter-club contests this past week as our focus shifted back from the Jimmy Riddle, Carrow Cup and finals weekend.
But it was a tough return to action as we ran up against three formidable sides in Hurstpierpoint’s invitation tournament.
With a number of key players missing – not least our two Jills and former ladies’ champions Linda and Nicola – it was always going to be an uphill task.
But there was plenty for the more inexperienced players to learn from playing against Henfield, Saltdean and, of course, the hosts.
Of our five victories during the day, three were against Saltdean, who were to finish second in the tournament.
The pairing of Anne and Fiona earned an eye-catching 10-2 win, while our ladies’ rinks quartet also defeated them – as did the men’s triples.
Our other two successes were against the tournament hosts – and winners – Hurstpierpoint, while we lost all six contests against Henfield.
While the tournament was not Hurstpierpoint’s main fund-raising event of the season, much of the money raised from side-shows at the club will go to its pet charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind.
