Coach driver Kean to make an impression at Chelsea

We’ve had a few decent coaches over the years but never – so far as I can tell – a coach driver.

But here’s Kean Pope, of Brighton Horizon Coaches, in action, shortly after driving our squad to the Royal Hospital Chelsea for our third annual match against the Pensioners.

Captain Jill Hatfield explains: “We only had 11 players and we were going to borrow one of the Chelsea Pensioners, but somebody asked Kean if he would play.

“He had never played before and said he would. He had a lot of fun and enjoyed the game. For someone who had never played before, he did really well.”

Our club had the rare privilege of a second invitation to play at the Royal Hospital, having done so last year in reciprocation for our hosting them in 2024.

There had been a couple of hiccups during our day last year, although members had unanimously voted the day a rousing success.

And this year’s squad were equally impressed by the grandeur of the surroundings and the honour of taking on the veterans.

We showed no mercy on the green, however, winning two of the three rinks and rounding off our season with a 55-29 victory.
